December 07 Steve's 2006 Christmas
A person is always startled when he hears himself seriously called an old man for the first time. King often said life kept getting better. I recall this positive outlook beginning in his 50’s and continuing through his late 80’s. I believe he believed it, but I often thought he was fooling himself. How could life get better well past one’s prime? Since a minor setback in my late 50’s, I now know what King was talking about. My life has since gotten better and better. A few reasons: retirement, time to learn and explore, confidence, cycling, exercise and good health. Feeling 25 at 25 is fine; feeling 25 at 60+, bountiful providence. At age 63, I look back at phases and transitions: school, health department job, flying, avocado ranching, handball, running, swimming, cycling, etc. During a given phase it’s hard to imagine when and how it will end, or what will be done in it’s stead. My sport phases have been the most enjoyable and the hardest to let go. Currently immersed in cycling and getting maximum satisfaction, I don’t look forward to the day of my last ride. However, having experienced many prime phases replaced by satisfying transitions, I’m sure I will move on to the next one reasonably well. And be satisfied with my past pleasures and occupations. My ’06 routine: up apx. 530, walk dog 2X a day, ride bike 4X/week 300 miles, 24 Hour fitness 3X week for easy swim, stretch and sauna; motorcycle rides, naps, computer sessions, investments, occasional trips to bike races, family gatherings, Down apx 830, Old Time Radio shows, dreams. A few ’06 highlights: Dorsey ‘57-‘61 reunion @ fabulous Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel/swim in famous pool, Amanda Harner’s High School graduation at rim of the Grand Canyon, EJ and Todd’s 50th Wedding Anniversary at Samson’s, Thanksgiving in Vegas with Ruffin’s and Harners (Niece Laura Harner), Christmas in Watsonville with Kornbergs (Niece Amy Tennyson) and Samsons (Niece Jo Tennyson). Cesar Milan, The Dog Whisperer states dogs need exercise, discipline and affection in that order. I say the same for humans, especially children, plus wholesome food (dogs too).
